About — 02 / 03

Light is thesubject. The restis arrangement.

Fluid Gallery, noun

A room where nothing hangs straight for long. The plates move the way the light does, and you follow.

Commissions

Four or five a year

01 — Practice

We work in a second-floor room with one west window and a set of glass we keep in a drawer. Most of what we make happens in the ninety minutes before the light leaves it.

Nothing here is composited. A prism is held at an angle until the colour lands where it should, and then someone has to stay very still. The long exposures are the opposite bargain: the room stays put and the person is allowed to become weather.

We shoot commissions four or five times a year, usually for people who want a portrait that does not look like a portrait. The rest of the year goes on the set, which grows by two or three plates and loses about as many.

Waiting

Flat and blue, and nothing to photograph. The glass stays in the drawer.

03 — The set falls into three

  • 01

    Light

Prism and macro. Light treated as an object you can hold up to a face.

    04
  • 02

    Drift

Motion and haze. The shutter left open long enough for a person to become weather.

    05
  • 03

    Reach

Intimate, backlit. Two things almost touching, photographed just before they do.
